big original sin lie

All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie.”

– Bob Dylan

The Big Original Sin Lie

The big original sin lie has rendered an ongoing war within the mind of man over the past thousands of years. The western world’s Holy Bible, also known as ‘The Word Of God,’ and shall here to forth be referred to as WOG, contains many distortions, deviations, additions and subtractions, in part due to several translations over time by people who are themselves infected with the conception of the big original sin lie. The big original sin lie is like a mafia or gang ‘protection racket’ with ‘salvation’ the one and only protection from ‘hell’ provided for by a select, elite ‘clergy’ who represent Authority.

To sin is, essentially, to be guilty, rather than innocent. Conventional public understanding of WOG points to the  ‘the first couple’ Adam and Eve as the originators of ‘sin.’ The sin in question is ‘disobedience.’ The couple were forbidden to eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Eve succumbed to persuasion by ‘The Serpent,’ took a bite of the fruit, Adam followed, and they were exiled from the paradise of ‘The Garden of Eden,’ for having disobeyed the dictate of an Authority. If you want to increase the appeal of something, make it forbidden fruit.

We are ever striving after what is forbidden, and coveting what is denied us.”

– Ovid

The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil is equivalent to The Tree of the Knowledge of Polarities. The material world of matter is upheld by polarities such as, positive and negative, expansion and contraction, attraction and repulsion, birth and death etc. Knowledge of polarities is a prerequisite for the mastery of polarities, and matter, and it may be that Adam and Eve were ‘beguiled’ or ‘tricked’ into entering the realm of polarities for their own evolutionary benefit; as it were, put on the path of mastery. A wise parent may maneuver situations so as to guide their child’s choices towards development. Sometimes, ‘reverse psychology’ works in favor of that end. So, perhaps, eating of that fruit was not a sin of disobedience but an intended tactic to channel intrinsic intelligence and curiosity in a specific direction, towards Individuation.

Eating the forbidden fruit of the tree appears more suggestive of initiation into individuation, than a violation. The ruse is sustained though for the benefit of Individuation. Individuation is a process of development which requires defiance and willfulness. It is a breaking away from……something; there needs to be a foil against which the individual can assert itself. For example, an individual can assert itself as ‘good’ only in defiance or willfulness against, that which is ‘evil,’ and vice versa. Banished from ‘Eden’ the unhappy couple are now in a material place, one which is polarized, divided, dualistic. Good and Evil are now binary choices. A ripe field for individuation. One of the primary features of individuation, and in conjunction with willful defiance, is choice and, in particular, binary choice, choice between this or that, yes or no, facts or fictions, truth or illusions. In willful defiance of the command to not eat of that fruit, the binary decision between obedience or defiance, compliance or dissent, is made and individuation begins. The crucial choice confronting the unhappy couple is not eating the fruit but, rather, a binary choice of basic material lifestyle orientation represented by the two different offerings of their two sons. So, eating of the fruit of that tree as disobedience is the big original sin lie, when it may more likely be the story of Initiation into Matter.

It should be noted that the WOG chapter known as Book Of Genesis (BOG) is an early attempt at explaining a comprehensive cosmology. Most religions of the world are, essentially, a cosmology, an understanding of the cosmos. Such understandings, to be Truth, must necessarily be Truth through all time, and space; a true cosmology encompasses the entire cosmos. Temporary truths are better relegated to the term ‘realities’ which are not permanent through time and space. The best way to express and explain cosmology is with figurative language, i.e., analogy, metaphor, allegory, myth and ‘fairy tales.’ WOG and BOG are often not literal but, rather, representational stories in the same way maps represent actual territory. But, the map is not the territory, and the stories are not Truth, though, like a map, contain relevant information about the terrain. Also, WOG and BOG are subject to distortions due to language translations, revised iterations, and editing, over time. That being said, the modern versions provide hints and clues of a more subtle and hidden meaning in various stories.

The story of Cain and Abel is significant in its linkage to the very purpose of Man.

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. -BOG 2:2 (emphasis added)

Man is made to ’till the ground’ which is a cryptic term with multi-dimensional meanings. The unhappy couple copulated and conceived a son, Caine, and then again, another son, Abel.

And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. –BOG 4:2 (emphasis added)

Like the term ’tiller of the ground,’ the term ‘keeper of sheep’ contains many layers of meaning. Regardless of the interpretation of these cryptic metaphorical terms, Cain represents the purpose of Man for Cain was a tiller of the ground. Both tiller of the ground and keeper of sheep represent, in their broadest sense, two distinct and different lifestyles orientations. Both brothers approach the outcast patriarch, Adam, to present the ‘offerings’ of their respective lifestyle orientation. A binary choice. Abel was chosen and Cain killed Abel. Conventional understanding suggests that Cain was jealous of Abel. However, it may be that Cain was so obedient to the fundamental, essential, purpose of Man, that he destroyed the alternative. As a result of this obedience, to Purpose, Cain was ‘banished’ to ‘The Land of Nod’ on the ‘East of Eden.’ The unhappy couple bore another child, Seth, and from that point on, WOG’s BOG and other lineal books are about whom begot whom (which would appear to lead back to incest) and the trials and tribulations of the descendants, learning from experience in the polarities of matter and following in the path of their original binary choice, ‘keeper of sheep.’

So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. –BOG 3:24

Consider….The Land of Nod is the Land of Not-Polarized, Not Matter, a place in which good and evil, positive and negative, birth and death are not, on the East of Eden, which represents sunrise, beginning, innocence, freshness and purity of a new day wherein is the Tree of Life.  Eden is ‘Paradise.’ Cain was banished from polarity, from matter, from Not-Paradise and sent to Seamless Undifferentiated Life, which is Paradise. The conventional understanding is that Cain was given an unbearable punishment, but, in the Land of Polarities, punishment and reward are two sides of the same individual coin, and can be flipped or ‘repolarized’ such that unbearable is welcoming and punishment is reward. The Land of Not Matter at the Sunrise of Paradise, may well be, rather than an unbearable punishment of banishment, more like an overwhelming reward of welcoming.

The descendants of the unhappy couple continue to struggle with both the big original sin lie and the trials and tribulations of a ‘keeper of sheep’ lifestyle orientation to this very day. And, yet, any day, a shift in lifestyle orientation to a ’till the ground’ approach is possible. What do these cryptic lifestyle orientation terms mean? A keeper of sheep can represent a meat based diet whereas a tiller of the ground can refer to a plant based diet. A keeper of sheep is nomadic, a tiller of the ground is agrarian. A keeper of sheep is ever herding the flock over to the next field, a tiller of the ground is ever attending to what is beneath their feet. A keeper of sheep requires grazing and migration, use and move on; a tiller of the ground requires planting and harvest, use and replenish. The difference between using up resources and migration vs. replenishing resources and remaining is similar to the differences between exploitation(and slavery) and stewardship(and mastery). Psyche-logically, a keeper of sheep refers to worldly knowledge and external self-validation, a tiller of the ground spiritual understanding and internal self-validation. A keeper of sheep explores the outer world, for nourishment; a tiller of the ground explores the inner world, for nourishment. If one’s hunger is to be grounded in the root of purpose, the path of tilling may be telling the way.

To forget one’s purpose is the commonest form of stupidity.”
